question on bullfighting?

Hi, i’m writing an essay in french about bullfighting in france. I just wanted to know if anyone knows any french websites about bullfighting?

Thanks in advance

The Easter Feria, opens the French bullfighting season and attracts 500,000 visitors including the 50,000 aficionados, or bullfighting fans, who actually attend the corridas in the Roman arena. It is followed by the Rice Feria in September.
Each year, before the Feria, the “Espace Toro”, located at the Gimeaux corrals, presents the bulls used for the corrida and offers information about bullfighting traditions in the south of France. Usually two fights per day take place in the Arles arena, ranked in the 1st category among the three categories of arenas in France.
The different types of bullfights :

* corridas de toros : animals between the ages of 4 and 6 years are fought by “matadors de toros”.
* novilladas with picadors : animals younger than 3 years (novillos) are fought by “matadors de novillos”, assisted by picadors.
* novilladas without picadors : animals between the ages of 2 and 3 years are fought by beginning bullfighters, without pricking.
* corridas de rejones : animals younger than 6 years are fought by “rejoneadores de toros” or “de novillos” on horseback.
* becerradas : animals between the ages of 18 and 24 months are fought, with or without killing, by professionals or by amateur aficionados.

The fight is governed by a president who insures that the bullfighting rules and regulations are respected. The paseo or parade is introduced by a trumpet call and all the participants are presented to the public. Then the bull surges out of the bull pen (“toril”) and is received by the torero with his cape, thus allowing him to judge the animal right from the beginning.
The fight can be divided into three parts or tercios :

* tercio de pique : the picador, on his armor-covered horse, will test the courage of the bull by pricking him at the top of the “morillo”.
* tercio de banderilles : banderillos (peones who assist the torero) place three pairs of banderillas on the withers to encourage the bull to attack. The matador may place the banderillas himself if he so desires.
* tercio de combat ou muleta : this is the matador’s moment of truth. He must control the bull, harmonize his movement’s with his, and then deal the final “estoquade”.

The show is also everywhere in the streets of the old city. The aficionados (bullfighting fans) can continue their evening after the fight at one of the thirty “bodegas” over a glass of sangria. Penas (bands of musicians) add to the festivities around the arena and through the city streets.

Bullfighting spread from Spain to its Central and South American colonies, and in the 19th century to France, where it developed into a distinctive form in its own right. Since the 19th century Spanish-style corridas have been increasingly popular in Southern France where they enjoy legal protection in areas where there is an uninterrupted tradition of such bull fights, particularly during holidays such as Whitsun or Easter. Among France’s most important venues for bullfighting are the ancient Roman arenas of Nîmes and Arles, although there are bull rings across the South from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coasts.

A more indigenous genre of bullfighting is widely common in the Provence and Languedoc areas, and is known alternately as “course libre” or “course camarguaise”. This is a bloodless spectacle (for the bulls) in which the objective is to snatch a rosette from the head of a young bull. The participants, or raseteurs, begin training in their early teens against young bulls from the Camargue region of Provence before graduating to regular contests held principally in Arles and Nîmes but also in other Provençal and Languedoc towns and villages. Before the course, an encierro — a “running” of the bulls in the streets — takes place, in which young men compete to outrun the charging bulls. The course itself takes place in a small (often portable) arena erected in a town square. For a period of about 15–20 minutes, the raseteurs compete to snatch rosettes (cocarde) tied between the bulls’ horns. They don’t take the rosette with their bare hands but with a claw-shaped metal instrument called a raset in their hands, hence their name. Afterwards, the bulls are herded back to their pen by gardians (Camarguais cowboys) in a bandido, amidst a great deal of ceremony. The star of these spectacles are the bulls, who get top billing and stand to gain fame and statues in their honor, and lucrative product endorsement contracts.

Another type of French ‘bullfighting’ is the course landaise style, in which cows are used instead of bulls. This is a competition between teams named cuadrillas, which belong to certain breeding estates. A cuadrilla is made up of a teneur de corde, an entraîneur, a sauteur, and six écarteurs. The cows are brought to the arena in boxes and then taken out in order. Teneur de corde controls the dangling rope attached to cow’s horns and the entraîneur positions the cow to face and attack the player. The écarteurs will try to dodge around the cow in the latest instance possible and the sauteur will leap over it. Each team aims to complete a set of at least one hundred dodges and eight leaps. This is the main scheme of the “classic” form, the course landaise formelle. However, different rules may be applied in some competitions. For example, competitions for Coupe Jeannot Lafittau are arranged with cows without ropes.

catalonia bullfighting ban

catalonia bullfighting ban
Why is Catalonia banning bullfighting? It’s just a cow, right? You could maybe cook & eat it afterward :) ?

Maybe I should try to answer the question.

The bullfight ban has a lot to do with Catalan nationalism.
During Franco’s time. Paco encouraged loads of Andalusian to move to Barcelona to work. His plan was to water down the Catalan culture.
At that time, bullfighting was popular in Barcelona (two bull rings says it all) and most of the so-called. “immigrants” were aficionados.

With autonomy, the Catalans want to flex their muscles and banning bullfighting is anti Andalusia / Spain and politically correct, so it is a great opportunity to piss-off Madrid.

I doubt that a full ban will be achieved because there are bull breeding farms in Catalonia, the traditional “correbou”s are a form of bullfighting; and in such hard times one must compensate people fully for destroying their livelihood.

To say that bull fighting is not Catalan is not true. It has been done in French Catalonia since the beginning of time.

Many people do feel that bull fighting should be banned because it is cruel. That is another matter.

Pedantic point. “Cow” can include animals of both sexes. e.g. Cowboy, Vaquero. There are also cow fights for tourists and learners.

One end is moo, the other milk.”

Life in the South of France

The Herault is a spectacular Department in the Languedoc Region of France. It gets it’s name from the beautiful River Herault, which meanders through it.

The French, when it comes to where they would most like to live, permanent or retirement, opt for the Herault, it’s their favorite location in all of France! Many buy homes in the area and house prices are rising steadly. Lots of foreigners have also discovered this and bought vacation or permanent homes in this tranquil area, where the main concern of the day can often be “what will I do today?” The pace is slower, the food healthier, life expectancy is longer, the worries are less…yes it’s tough.

Real estate prices are still pretty reasonable, in the Languedoc region, making it a good time to buy. You can choose from a chalet, apartment, village/town house, or luxury villa with swimming pool. Prices vary, depending on how close to the sea or a particular town or village. Each village or town has Estate Agent’s Offices (Immobiliers) with plenty of photos in their windows, call in and have a chat, more than likely they’ll show you properties that same day.

When buying real estate in France you can save paying the agents fee’s. Just travel around and find properties being sold privately by their owners. In most cases you will see a hand written sign saying “A Vendre”. If you have the time, travel from town to village looking for your potential dream home, if possible staying overnight, meeting the locals and experiencing the place.

It’s easy to understand why the Herault is so popular. Montpellier is the major city in this department, with it’s international airport and first class train service, this beautiful historical and modern city, offers an abundance of places to see and things to do, it’s a great base and starting point to commence your exploration of the area, be it by car or rail.

The major towns and villages of Beziers, Marseillan, Sete, Agde, Meze, Pezenas and lots more, each with their own unique style and character are all within an hours journey by rail or car.

You can experience the breath taking landscape of small villages nestled and embraced by dramatic mountains and vineyards. Take a stroll along the many rivers and canals, relax on the banks of the Canal du Midi watching the colorful barges quietly float by. Let the day drift along, picnicking on the shores of serene lakes.

The Herault Department is well known for its miles and miles of clean, sandy, sun drenched Mediterranean beaches. With over 300 days of sunshine per year it’s a magnet for holiday makers, especially the French themselves, (need I say more?)

Every village and town in the Herault has at least one market a week, selling breads, cheeses, meats, fish and vegetables along with clothes, bric a brac and the kitchen sink. They are lively and colorful events with plenty of bargains. No matter how small the village or town you’re in, you’ll find copious amounts of shopping malls, nearby or a short distance away.

For the young and not so young, there’s plenty of things to keep you occupied. Theme and safari parks, water sports, cycling/walking trails, museums, galleries, golf, tours, bullfighting and the best cuisine and wines in the world. Visit some super ancient castles, forts and chateaux, marvel at the original roman viaducts bridges and towers, still in a state of great preservation. Walking around the villages your sense of smell will be charged by the local cuisine…bon appetite.

The Herault in the South of France is certainly well worth a visit and is definitely a great place to buy a home!
